Sex education for first graders leaves out clitoris

Image...
A new course on sex education in China involves what some might consider some pretty graphic literature - especially for 1st graders (primary). Funny cartoons, witty dialogues, testicles that talk to one another, and cool-looking Mr Condoms wearing shades (gallery of pics through link). I kinda wich my sex-ed classes were this open, though I was dissapointed to see the diagram of the vagina didn't include a label for the clitoris. Should kids not be taught how they can enjoy sex?

What d'you think? Too shocking for 1st grade? Or pretty good progress?

I'd have to say it's a little more information than a first grader is going to be able to grasp...remember that's 6 years old.

It is progress, but maybe reserve the more detailed information for when they're a little older.

I was expecting something more in depth, or at least a mention of bukkake.

I'd include it on the diagrams to be anatomically correct, but it shouldn't be highlighted; kids at that age don't need to know the subtleties.

You want first graders to be taught what a clitoris is?

    Why?

When I was young, my parents gave me a book called "Where Did I Come From". It was basically the same thing. Honestly, I don't remember if they talked about a clitoris or not. I don't see any reason to leave it out though!

How old are first graders? that's they key.

Sex ed for little children is about how babys are made (stork factory fyi) and it wouldn't be a big deal.

Older children and it would be a bit odd.

The funny thing about all this is it's like we're afraid of sex, afraid to tell children about it, afraid to give kids knowledge. I don't get it. What's the big deal?

    its perventing over pop!
if they dont learn about the thing that makes you have fun the little girls wont be as eager to do it and then no babies!
i for one think its subliminal birth control
teach em young and getter done!

    @ DeliaTheArtist...

You're right...we shouldn't be afraid of sex or educating our children.

I do think that some of this information would go over their heads at 6.

    @CondomElite...

I agree...I would rather inform my children myself instead of allowing them to get a mixed up perspective from their peers.

People teach their children their body parts when they are very young. Eyes, nose, mouth etc...they just skip the girl / boy bits.

For my kids...they knew the proper names for all their body parts. I don't think I was thinking sex ed at the time. It was more...if someone is going to try to do them harm I want them to have the proper language to tell me.

1st grade i think is a little extreme... plus whatever happened to the parents having the responsibity of talking to thier kids about sex the regular way? we had to learn sex ed in 5th grade and that was i think the best age to be introduced by the school

most men haven't even found the clitoris....or any actual use for one, well into their advancing years. perhaps if we had only told all the little the 1st graders about them, the world might be a better place. Let's teach them about recycling in 1st grade, and maybe how to tie a shoe. I'm thinking...no....no cunnilingus lessons for the elementary boys. they'd totally get cooties. Just a bit too young. Discuss.

It should not be surprising that in a country ruled by communism that the best female erogenous zone be ignored... typical!

I don't think first graders should learn that kinda stuff just yet because they haven't even hit puberty or an understanding about the opposite sex. I do'nt think it would be safe to expose them at such an early age.

in some ways I think this is good, it makes sex less mysterious and interesting. By the time they're in middle school they might not think anything of sex, just another mundane part of life. Instead of trying to experiment with something unknown. Curiosity kills the cat I guess.

Well for 1st graders I'd explain puberty.

The books an okay idea mostly it's showing what the body and privates will look like and what they do. That condom section however probably isn't necessary till a couple years on.

However, sex ed becomes especially lacking from that point on. There's a flaw in sex ed that's defeating it's purpose (preventing pregnancy and STIs). There never seems to be a thorough explaination of what sex is, how it happens, and that it should be had in a mature adult relationship.

And on top of that, what a mature adult relationship is.

OK, first lets dish out the irony out in the comments and make it evident why this is need here in the US as well as China!
    1. The privates are in the military, genitals are on the human body. No "down there", "girl boy bits, or parts "
    2. Teach the kids what their clitoris is before they cut it off. They do practice female circumcision in china. I guess if your gonna get it cut off why learn what one is.
    3. little girls start rubbing themselves(masturbating without climaxing) at 2 to 3 yrs old. Most parents say things like stop picking at yourself, your diaper, panties, pants etc.
    4. If the kids are intellectually too young for the information then they wont comprehend it anyways, so no harm. Ex. try to explain the empty vacuum of space vs. the empty air we breath. both look empty but ones not.
    5. Kids need to learn about their bodies, what they do, and about sex which is NOT evil, but has consequences...simple
